As of October 13, 2020 there are 4 SARS-CoV-2 vaccines that are currently in phase 3 clinical trials.
Before vaccines are FDA approved, they must go through a series of phases of clinical trials to show that they work and that they are safe. There are three phases of the trial:
· Phase 1 – a small group receive the vaccine (tests dosage and safety)
· Phase 2 – clinical study is expanded (expanded safety trials)
· Phase 3 – vaccine is given to large group of people to test for efficacy (does the vaccine work and for how long?) and safety (what are the side effects?)
· Phase 4 – vaccine approved and continued research once vaccine has been approved to assess for continued efficacy (lasting immunity)
The current vaccination trials are for adults only, although some are now starting to include individuals age 12 years and older.
For FDA approval from the phase 3 trial, the FDA is wanting evidence that the vaccine can protect at least 50% of those who received it. We are currently in this phase and collecting data.
Once a vaccine is available, it will take a while for enough immunization to be produced to immunize everyone. In the meantime, the vaccine will likely be given in priority of healthcare workers and those at high risk of complications with COVID. Unfortunately, there have not yet been any studies with young children thus far. Likely once a vaccine is FDA approved then further studies will be done for the younger ages.
